Gassed at Nieuwpoort Died of wounds at La Panne Hospital His Commanding Officer wrote : ' He was a good soldier, and carried out his work in a most praiseworthy manner. He did his duty at all times cheerfully and well, and was adored by all his comrades. All the officers of the company tender their most heartfelt sympathy in your extreme loss" Another officer wrote: ' I wish to express my sincere sympathy with you all in your loss. Your son was one of the finest young men in our company. He was one of our most capable NCO's and a great favourite with all. Unfortunately I was not with him the night he was wounded, and the officer in charge of the work that night has been too unwell to write. Everything possible was done for your son, the officer accomanied him to the dressing station. We visited the hospital the folowing evening. His foot had been so injured that amputation was necessary ; the operation was successful. He seemed to be pulling round when he suddenly succumbed to shock." |

He volunteered for the front and had served 13 years with the Royal Marines Killed in action just over a month after his marriage He received the Croix de Guerre for devotion to duty. "He was mentioned in dispatches of the Jutland Battle when serving on HMS Warrior, which put up so gallant a fight." He was presented with the award, along with 30 other men, on 20th June by Colonel Barbier of the French Artillery, "pinning it on our breasts and shaking hands with us". The next day he was also given a certificate and his commanding officer wrote a copy in English for him, and both were to be framed. |
