He volunteered in the 11th (Service) Battalion, Rifle Brigade. After initial training at Hamilton Camp, near Stonehenge, the battalion was posted abroad and landed at Boulogne Killed in action during attack on the road towards Langemarck. They had to cross the Steenbeek (a stream) running almost north-south, 400metres east of land that is now the cemetery. The 11th Battalion suffered heavy casualties in reaching their objective, a mill, some 200metres further on, but they could not take this heavily fortified position so they withdrew. This action resulted in 1 Officer and 43 men of the 11th Battalion killed on the 14th/15th August. In a letter received by Lance Sergeant Ashton’s parents, his Commanding Officer wrote : 'Harry was sent on an important mission with his platoon in which he lost his life. The work was dangerous but he went about his duty as always. I always appreciated his sterling qualities under a quiet manner and you may well be proud of such a son.' Proceeded to France He was attached to and started work in the surgical ward of N°7 General Hospital set up at Amiens , France. This had to be abandoned in the retreat from Mons, and he was afterwards attached to the 1st Bn. Cameron Highlanders. Was wounded by shell fire while attending to a wounded man in the open,during an engagement between the villages of Bixschoote and Langemarck, and died the next day in a hospital at Elverdinghe. He originally held a commission in the 2nd West Yorkshire Volunteer Battalion and served withthe 4th Durham Light Infantry Militia in the South African War. He was present at the operations in the Orange River and Cape Colonies , receiving the Queen's Medal with 3 clasps. He obtained a commission, Second Lieutenant, in the 1st Middlesex Regiment Becoming Lieutenant Promoted Captain into the 4th Bn. He embarked for active service with his battalion . Fell at Mons , while cheering and encouraging his men with great bravery. He was a very keen sportsman, a very good shot with the rifle, obtaining many good heads in India and Burmah, and was also keen on regimental sports. |

Volunteered for Imperial service after the outbreak of War and joined the H.A.C. Proceeded to France as one of a draft to the 1st Battalion Killed in action at Hooge He volunteered to go in support of an advanced company to hold a captured trench and while advancing was hit in the head by a piece of high explosive shell and killed instantaneously. He was originally buried by the side of a path leading to the Sunken Road between Hooge and Potijze. He was a very keen sportsman , being vice-captain of the Old Elstonian Hockey Club and a member of the Ealing Cricket Club, upon the committee of which he served. |
