Distinguished Service Order , London Gazette 1 january 1917 ; 'During operations on September 1916 this officer, though wounded, continued to carry on his duties in a most efficient manner. He has Always displayed great coolness and has brought his battery to a most staisfactory state of efficiency. During operations on the 15th September he re-organised and practically took over command of the 12th Battery when its C.O. became a casualty. This he again did in a most efficient manner on the 25th when its C.O. was again a casualty and by his personal supervision and coolness, instilled confidence in the battery personnel during heavy shellfire. Mentioned in despatches , London Gazette 4 january 1917; 'Mentioned in Despatch from General Sir Douglas Haig,G.C.B. dated 13 november 1916. Attending 12 courses of gunnery at General Headquarters To hospital and admitted at 2 West Lancs Field Ambulance and transferred to N°53 Casualty Clearing Station. Transferred to the 4th Stationary Hospital at Boulogne , France Promoted Major Discharged from hospital Marched in at N°1 New Zealand General Base Depot at Etaples Marched out to Division and joined the 5th Battery ,2nd Brigade in the field. Proceeded on leave to England Rejoined unit in the field Wounded in action for a second time with gunshot wound to the head. Discharged to duty On leave to England Rejoined unit Killed in action at Ypres An eye-witness account ; 'The death of Major Rogers is deeply regretted. He served through the Gallipoli Campaign and took with his artillery in the Battle sof the Somme , Messines and Passchendaele being twice wounded. He paid a visit to Headquarters and was killed instantaneously by a high explosive shell while walking along the road back to his Battery.' |
