He passed into Woolwich and obtained a commission in the Royal Field Artillery. He went to France with the RFA, and served through the Retreat from Mons. He was tranferred to the Royal Horse Artillery as a Captain, serving at the front continuously for three and a half years Was mentioned in Despatches for his part in the Second Battle of Ypres. Took command of 65th Howitzer Battery in 28 Brigade of the RFA. 28 Brigade was an Army Brigade, not attached to any particular division but used to support major operations. Enlisted in the HAC, part of the newly formed territorial force, eventually rising to Sergeant After serving on the East Coast for some months, he sailed for Egypt In Egypt he was sent to a school of instruction, and was commissioned Left for Macedonia, and he was on the Bulgarian front in the Struma Valley until July, when his horse fell on him, and broke his ankle. He was invalided to Malta, and finally to England Left for France He was sitting in a trench with several other officers of the Battery, when a shell burst in their midst and killed them all. |
