Entered the King's Own Scottish Borderers Served throughout the Boer War was present at the actions at Vet River and Zand River ; those near Johannesburg and Pretoria and at Zillikats' Nek for which he receveined the Queen's medal with three clasps and the King's medal with two clasps. Promoted Captain Retired being gazetted to the 3rd Reserve Battalion On the outbreak of war he was attached to the 2nd Battalion Proceeded to France Killed in action and believed to be buried near Pilkem. Major D'Ewes Coke wrote: 'The actual event which gained him the DSO was when we were holding trenches in front of Ypres in november 1914. His trench was several times attacked by Prussian Infantry , as well as being subjected to very heavy fire from minewerfers and artillery, but he stuck to it and defended his trench with great bravery' He was well known in the hunting field and was frequently out with the Cottesmore and Belvoir packs. An extract from the 2nd Bn. King's Own Scottish Borders War diary , dated 23 april 1915 : Location : Yser Canal , Ypres 'About 30 men , chiefly 'C' Company with a few of 'A' Coy. advanced under Captain Bland beyond the trenches occupied by Canadians and established themselves in an old support trench about 100 yards forward. In attempting to pass beyond this , the party was wiped out. Captain Bland was killed trying to pull a wounded man into cover.' |
