Australian Infantry as a Corporal Embarked on HMAT Runic at Melbourne Promoted sergeant at sea 38th Bn.. Disembarked at Plymouth at 2pm , entrained for Lark Hill Camp , Salisbury Plains Proceeded overseas to France ex Southampton to Le Havre Arrived from Le Havre at Strazeele where they billeted Marched out to Armentières (billeted) Relieved New Zealand Troops Houplines area. Admitted to hospital sick ( bronchitis) Rejoined Battalion from hospital Promoted 2nd Lieutenant Promoted Lieutenant Killed in action * Eye witness account of his death by Private Green F.A. , 38th Bn. AIF He was in a dugout in support lines at Messines when a high explosive shell exploded hit. He was instantly killed , one leg being broken in two places and severely wounded the body. I was talking to him just before he was killed and Sgt. Roberts L.A. and myself wrapped him in a blanket and sent him to Kandahar Dressing Station. He was well known and liked by all his men. |

AIF Embarked on HMAT Barambah at Sydney Disembarked at Plymouth entrained for Lark Hill Camp , Salisbury Plains Taken on strength 34th Bn. from 53rd Bn. Proceeded overseas to France from Southampton 1 am : Battalion arrived at Le Havre and marched out to N°1 Rest Camp Tired and sore after a heavy uphill march resulted in 2 sick. 8 am : Marched out to Le Havre Railway Station departing at 11:15 am. Detrained at 4:30 pm at Bailleul and moved out to outtersteene where they billeted. Trench relief of the 35th Bn. succeeded without incident Trench Mortar and Artillery Bombardment Enemy machine gun and rifle fire more active than usual. Searchlight at work all night - Heavy mist - Bad visiblity Patrols as usual - Listening posts installed - some wiring done L'Epinette : Light Trench Mortar and Artillery firing and enemy retaliation. machine gun and rifle fire active Searchlight busy - Patrols from each locality - no results misty and unfavourable for observation casualties Enemy artillery active about 3 pm and responded with retaliation. Damage to the trenches - listening posts knocked down as usual - 1 hun observed dressed in Blue Prussian uniform Artillery inactive. 4 rounds fired at the enemy. party - Patrols as usual Encountered enemy patrol 5 five. Snipers claim 2 hits - machine gun active snipers active. day -poor for observation Effective enemy machine gun and rifle fire causing some damage. to be wearing peaked caps wit red bands. Quiet day. Aeroplane flying low over enemy lines towards Lille reported as fired upon by them. Subsequent information revealed to an enemy plane . Misty day. Artillery and Trench Mortar fire. Some damage to our frontline by own heavy artillery shells. Patrols send out to examine the wire , German patrols encountered. Artillery and Trench mortar fire - retaliation enemy fire. Enemy working party dispersed . Enemy artillery caused much damage to frontline and support lines. Artillery active on both sides. 9 patrols send out - no enemy encountered Otherwise quiet. Artillery and Trench Mortar fire. Patrols send out - Ecountered a strong enemy patrol covering a working party. Enemy patrol attempted to surround our patrol. Dog observed to be running to enemy lines. Artillery and Trench Mortar fire. Patrols send out - Wiring parties out repairing - enemy patrols encountered. Very quiet day - No artillery - Foggy - Observation poor - Frontline improved At night 2 machine guns placed in front line and swept the enemy parapet and wire-Enemy retaliated No patrols - listening post report no enemy activity. Start relievement In billets in Armentieres - Working parties , fatigues etc... Kit inspection - Baths and General smartening up - Training. Moved to reserve billets at Steenwerck. Working parties erecting huts. Moved out to billets in Armentières In the frontline at Houplines. Little artillery activity - Patrols as usual - Listening post established. Enemy patrol detetcted and dispersed with light gun fire- enemy retaliation with shrapnel and high explosive shells. Enemy aeroplanes active throughout the day . Some artillery fire throughout the day. Aircraft activity from both sides. Patrols as usual - Listening post established - several enemy patrols dispersed - enemy artillery retaliation. Artillery active - Patrols as usual - Aircraft active Enemy artillery more active than usual . Sounds of metal being unloaded heard behind enemy lines. Enemy sounds driven off by Aircraft Guns. 1 officer and 1 other rank killed - 8 wounded Artillery active - Patrols as usual - enemy wire strong About 6h15 while raid was opening up , enemy sounded horns in all directions also sent up a fair amount of Red Very lights. Enemy plane flew over the lines at 10h30 am 1 other rank killed - 5 wounded Heavy artillery active - Patrols as usual - Some 77 shells fired into subsidiary line -Otherwise inactive. Rifle grenades fired from 'Hobbs Farm' - enemy retaliation Enemy planes observed from 11h30 till late afternoon. 9 wounded Saps discovered in front of trench , also 3 large shell holes to the left of these. Searchlights and very lights much used that evening . Enemy bombed his own wire. 7 wounded. Relieved by the 36th Bn. In billets at Armentieres - supplying working parties - kit inspection - baths and general smartening up. Relieved the 36th Bn. at Houplines. Some artillery fire to cover Trench Mortar - enemy artillery unuasally quiet. A few Minenwerfer pineapples retaliated - Enemy aeroplane active but driven back to by aircraft guns. Detached to 2nd Tunneling Coy. Rejoined 34th Bn. from detachement Admitted to 77th Field Ambulance due to influenza Transferred to duty from 75th Field Ambulance Rejoined 34th Bn. Detached to rest camp Rejoined unit from rest camp Killed in action * Eye witness account of his death by Private Childs W. , 34th Bn. AIF He was in "B" Coy. 8th Platoon . I saw him being killed by a shell at Messines on 29 july . He was on a working party, he lived about an hour after being hit and diedwhile being carried on the stretcher. He was a stretcher bearer. |

Previously served with the 5th New England Light Horse(Militia) Enlisted in the AIF Applied for an officer commission Gazetted Lieutenant Embarked on HMAT Benalla in Sydney Arrived at Devonport , England He was immediately admidded to Devonport Military Hospital with measles. Discharged from Hospital to Perham Downs Camp Proceeded overseas to France with his battalion. He was taken on strength of the 38th Bn. from the 5th Reinforcements Killed in action * Eye witness account of his death by Signaller Ballinger G.E. , 38th Bn. AIF I saw him killed in the Company Headquarters dugout in the support trench at Messines. A shell landed in the dugout penetrating it and killing him , Lieutenant Abbey and 3 others instantly. |
