' For conspicious galantry and devotion to duty.
When all his officers had been killed he took charge of his Company during a very hostile attack and displayed qualities of leadership and courage that were beyond praise.
He personally and at great risk , under heavy fire , dug out two men who had been buried by a shell in their trench thereby saving there lives.
His splendid example had a wonderful effect upon the men.'
