An eye-witness account from Gunner Borden , 11th AFA :
' He was wounded by a splinter in the stomach from a high explosive shell in his dugout at night , behind Zonnebeke , about 2 am. He thought he was all right and did not want to go away . However he lay down in a dugout and went to sleep. They found him very sleepy , doped as we would call it . Later we heard that he died , he had bled internally , the wound being deeper than he thought.'

'Enemy have been active all day and night. Battery poistions were shelled at all times. Harassing fire has been kept on roads and approaches. 3 other ranks wounded and evacuated.'
